I wrote my own canon....

A new adventure I've never been on, composition. It was definitely very difficult, and yes, I was on the verge of giving up (and then I realized that this is for marks, so I couldn't.) from complete frustration. Luckily, I did it, and although I don't find it to be my best, it did sound better than what I thought it was going to sound like.

So, what WAS the actual process like for me?

Firstly, I already had a small melody in my head that was just stuck there. This was the beginning of my song. However, I wanted my canon to be Mixolydian so I did have to sort some things out.

Once I figured out a small melody that worked, I started out by writing out the solfege on a separate with the chords that would work (such as Sol Ti Re, etc.) so I could figure out the rest of this melody so chords would work together and nothing too dissonant would appear in the canon.

That wasn't too bad of a process within itself, as I just needed to figure out some different rhythms, just so there's a small contrast within the melody itself.

Unfortunately, the worst was yet to come, the recording itself.

I'm just going to say it straight, I was on the verge of throwing my phone across my room as I was trying to record my solfege. I'd either say the solfege right and get the completely wrong pitch, or I'd get the right pitch and the completely wrong solfege, there was no in-between.

After a couple hours of anger, sadness and being on the verge of tears from getting worked up about this all at once, I just ended up recording four bars at a time. I really liked how my canon sounded, I was just having such a hard time recording and I didn't want to start the whole writing process over again.

Luckily, I was able to get the four-bar chunks pretty well. It was much easier for me than doing the whole recording at once.

So, what is the one thing that I've learned from this?

1. I got to stop being so hard on myself.

If it isn't obvious already, I am way too hard on myself. I just want everything to be absolutely perfect, and I usually sometimes won't settle for less. However, this project made me realize is that this was the best that I could do, and there's always more time to improve. Besides, after listening to it, I have to say, it sounds pretty good to me!

Watch it for yourself here!
